The Chinese character for joy, 喜 (hee), displays the repetitiveness characteristic of architecture-like beauty. Forms disappeared and then reemerged, and within transformations of extinction and evolution, they repeated expansion and contraction to achieve overall harmony while also growing within constraints. These elements symbolize a space of meaning that invites empathy. I visually expressed the positive feeling and symbolism embodied in the bilaterally symmetrical pattern of the Chinese character itself. By reflecting the spatial feeling possessed by the character within a flat surface, I created a sense of circulation, as a form that gathers infinite energy while being swept up in a swirling flow. I produced this design to be used for carpets, wallpaper, and even scarves.
