In one chaekgado painting (’ Books and Scholar’s Utensils’) I was struck by its remarkable remarkably detail, with intricate patterns on book wrappings and ceramics. There was an overwhelming sense of power radiating from the work—a unique quality given that, unlike most chaekgado, this piece is rendered in ink wash.
I shaped the forms by selecting pixels based on the varying tones and shades of the ink. As the image takes shape along these points — like an afterimage — the most potent visual forms remain. As if squinting to perceive the essence of an object, these pixels distil and preserve the fundamental meaning of the image.
