The meeting of Standard A and Mono Collection began with the ‘Barangjae’ hanok stay project in Gangwon Province.
The Barangjae project, embodying the aesthetics of ‘Borrowed Landscape’, was overseen by Mono Collection, while Standard A designed and crafted the furniture for the shared and accommodation spaces.
Hwajodo Ji_Chang, originally designed as furniture for storing bedding in the rooms of Barangjae, has now been introduced as part of Standard A’s new range of furniture through exhibition pieces in Chang Eungbok’s solo show Equinox:2026at the Seoul Museum of Craft Art.
Hwajodo Ji_Chang
A Ji_Chang (paper chest) was a cabinet used in the Joseon period to store clothing or precious silk, where hanji paper or silk was applied inside and outside the wooden frame to naturally regulate humidity and facilitate ventilation. Though modest and neat in appearance, the interior reflects the restrained luxury of ancestors who enjoyed a secret elegance through lavish calligraphy and painting.
We have reinterpreted Ji_Chang, a unique heritage, into modern living furniture through Monocollection’s textile technology. Hwajodo has long been a motif that imitates flowers, birds, and the surrounding nature to pray for peace and joy in daily life. Monocollection captures the sentiment of “Dream of the Peach Blossom,” rooted in Mingei, by portraying the shapes of flowers, birds, and butterflies in subtle, flowing jade hues on fabric with a dreamy texture.
While the surface texture reveals a refined and serene presence, the floral bird-and-flower pattern that appears with each opening and closing of the long scroll evokes the tranquility of admiring a silk artwork. The balance between the sturdy wooden frame that preserves the object’s value and the flexible fabric that gently captures light and air, along with the harmony of these two different materials within the furniture, is elegant.
