Here, the buncheong johwa bakji moranmun pyeonbyeong, meaning ‘flat bottle with carved peony design on buncheong ceramics’, served as my inspiration. I found the forms intriguing —they abstractly and simply depicted the symbolic meanings not only of peony flowers but also of leaves and seeds bursting from seed pods. I drew the lines and patterns of buncheong ceramics together and digitally layered watercolor-like blur effects over them. By repeatedly rising and settling back, they became infused with the drawing structure. From the very beginning of creating this pattern, I was inspired by the techniques of Korean monochrome painting — Dansaekhwa — and that influence continues to resonate through my work today.
