This pattern was created from the work of photographer Yul Kim. In his photograph, the dry, bare branches against a snow-covered field were beauty itself—nothing to add, nothing to subtract. The black branches against the naturally minimal white background showed the energy of life piercing through the cold earth. When transformed into a pattern, the white background was infused with a deep indigo-blue hue. The world has repeated its cycles of creation and extinction for a long time—for hundreds of years, tens of thousands of years, for an unknowably vast span of time—and the 24 lunisolar terms must have repeated along with it. The blue represents that infinite cycle of time, eternity held within the frozen earth.
