My interest in nature’s changes, plants, and trees began around 2008. After subsequently living close to nature for many years, I observed and archived the daily shifts in the seasons. This zelkova tree pattern was also designed based on my study of the flooring of Sangchunjae at the presidential Blue House in Seoul. The patterns of the spacious zelkova flooring convey an impression akin to abstract painting. When working on a draft design for hwamunseok (flower-patterned mat), a traditional Korean craft, I became intrigued by how similar its method of composition was to digital pixel design. That discovery inspired me to develop the idea further, applying pixelation under the concept of’“warm geometry.’ Tiny dots accumulate to connect lines and form surfaces, eventually creating shapes that evoke a sense of awe.
